About the artwork
from Empires II series
Every object transcends its physical form into language, and has a story to tell; a type of mythology. It’s not simply a thing, but an invisible network of histories, metaphors, and references which are culturally handed down.
About the artist
My practice is concerned with the experience of familiarity in fiction, and mythologies of objects. It explores the way cultural references can validate belief, trigger interpretations, and habituated ways of seeing.
Anna Pogossova is a Moscow born, Sydney based still-life photographer and artist, whose work is concerned with the mythologies of objects.
Hailing from a Fine Arts background, Anna often uses a variety of mediums to construct a photographic image, including painting, set design and digital illustration. Her signature style, which has been previously described as Pop-Surrealism, can be attributed to a mix of formal arts training, and her personal interests in popular culture iconographies and technology. There is a recognisable nod to her influences throughout her photographic work; from classical painting to science fiction film.
Anna has previously undertaken artist residencies in Iceland and New York and has exhibited in Sydney and London. She was featured in the Vice Photo Annual and profiled by a number of publications including Creative Review UK. Anna has also been exclusively invited, by Vogue Australia, to reimagine Cartier’s Naturellement exhibition at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art as a conceptual still life shoot.
Anna’s clients include 10 Magazine, Vogue, Elle, Oyster, Museum Magazine, Vice, Grazia, GQ, Vogue Living, Manuscript, Russh, Tiger Beer, Westfield, David Jones, Myer Emporium, Lane Crawford, James St, City of Sydney, Dion Lee, Sass & Bide, Canon, Nokia and many others.
