About the artwork
My work explores broader social issues through the intimate stories of these strong & inspiring women.
About the artist
My photography often takes a critical view of social, political & cultural issues. Of a documentary & portrait nature my mostly intimate visual stories form part of larger bodies of work that together create a visual narrative - exploring our relationships to the wider community within cultural constructs & a changing environment.
Australian born photographer Lisa Maree Williams has an extensive history in portraiture and documentary. She has over the past two decades worked closely with leading agencies and publishers such as; Getty Images, Bloomberg, APN News Group, News Corp, and Fairfax Media.
Lisa's work traverses editorial, commercial and art realms, chronicling issues surrounding gender, migration and changes in the cultural landscape. Working independently since 2005, projects have taken her throughout Asia, Cuba, North America, Japan, Brazil, Europe and her home country of Australia.
IWD 2019 is about #balanceforbetter. What does this mean to you as a female photographer?
I’ve engaged a varied range of subjects over the years, in more recent times this has included ones of a female perspective such as Australian Muslim Women In Sport, The New Australians, Tokyo’s Oldest Grisha & Female Survivors of Violence in Australia. Upon reflection of this year’s theme ‘Balance For Better’, I think more diversity in storytelling on all platforms could be a most effective way to encourage inclusivity as we look to the future.
